A personal budget spreadsheet template that does the work for you
Most free budget templates are just an empty grid with the word "Budget" at the top. You still have to build the formulas, decide the categories, and work out whether your numbers are actually good or bad. That is why so many of them get downloaded once and never opened again.
This one is different in a way that matters. The math is finished. Every total, every percentage, and every color is calculated the moment you type a number, so the spreadsheet tells you what is wrong instead of waiting for you to notice.
What is inside the budget template
The workbook has three tabs, and you only ever type into one of them:
- Start Here. A plain-English guide to the layout. About thirty seconds of reading.
- Monthly Budget. Income, fixed expenses, variable expenses, savings and goals, and debt payoff. Type into the light green cells and nothing else.
- Dashboard. Everything calculated for you: total income, total money out, money left over, savings rate, and how your spending splits against the 50/30/20 rule.
The personal budget template for Excel
The Excel version is the full workbook, with dropdown menus for tagging each expense as a Need, a Want, or Save, and conditional formatting that drives the red and green. It opens in Microsoft Excel, Apple Numbers, and LibreOffice, so it works whatever you have on your computer. This is the version most people want if they budget at a desk.
The personal budget template for Google Sheets
If you would rather work in a browser, the Google Sheets version does the same job with nothing to install. Clicking the button above prompts Google to make your own private copy in your Drive. Your copy is yours alone, and editing it changes nothing for anyone else. This is the easiest option if you budget on a phone or share the budget with a partner.
The printable PDF budget template
Some people simply think better on paper, and there is nothing wrong with that. The PDF has the same sections laid out to print cleanly, with space to write in your numbers by hand. It is a good choice for a fridge door or a household binder.
Why we built this
We built the free budget template because a calculator gives you an answer once, and a budget has to survive the whole month. Our budget planner calculator shows you where you stand today, and this spreadsheet is how you keep it going after you close the tab. Same 50/30/20 logic, same red and green warnings, just something you own.
It is free with no signup because a budget template is not worth trading your email for, and pretending otherwise would be silly. Download it, use it, send it to anyone who needs it.
